When the surge from Hurricane Isaias came over the dunes at Grayton Beach, it filled Western Lake and pushed water a long way across it. WJHG reported that the surge moved a private dock about a quarter mile down the lake and left it at a public dock. Grayton local Billy Buzzett told the station about something less visible. The lake normally flows into the Gulf, and during the storm that flow reversed.
The reversal matters because it ran through equipment Western Lake already has. The lake is built to trade water with the Gulf at its Grayton end. Isaias pushed that trade the other way, at storm strength, through the same door. The lake's layout decides where Gulf water goes once it's inside, and that layout explains how the water around Grayton will behave through November.
A Lake That Opens and Closes on Its Own
Walton County's coastal dune lakes are only partly connected to the Gulf. The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance explains the cycle this way. When a lake's water rises high enough, it cuts through the dune and beach sand and empties into the Gulf. The channel it carves is the outfall. Depending on tides and wind, Gulf saltwater can come back up that channel, carrying saltwater plants and animals, until the levels even out and the opening closes again.
The same CBA page lists storm surge as one of the regular sources of lake water, along with rain, groundwater and tributaries. It also says the lakes are "tremendously impacted by hurricane activity." Florida State Parks' coastal dune lakes page for Grayton gives the same account: water breaks through the sand berm toward the Gulf, and saltwater can move back up the channel and mix with the fresh.
Seen that way, the surge was the lake's normal Gulf exchange arriving all at once and in the wrong direction. Grayton local Leila Harris told WJHG that sand that had reached the boardwalk the day before was gone, "you can walk right under it," and that "the dunes across the lake are flat."
Three Lobes and One Narrow Channel
Western Lake isn't one open bowl, and that shapes everything about where the Gulf's water ends up. CBA's 2025 Coastal Dune Lake Water Chemistry Report, dated September 20, 2026, calls it the second-largest coastal dune lake system, about 98 hectares and roughly 300 meters from the Gulf. A shallow, narrow channel splits it into western and eastern lobes. Highway 30A then splits the eastern side again, with two bridges keeping the three lobes connected.
The western piece, which the report calls the Grayton Lobe, holds the outfall, and that outfall "frequently connects to the gulf." The report calls the channel to the other two lobes "a bottleneck for seawater inflows," and the salinity numbers show what that means.
| Part of Western Lake | Salinity reported by CBA | What the figure is |
|---|---|---|
| Grayton Lobe | 18.22 ppt | Report's description of the lobe |
| Western Bowl lobe | 8.23 ppt | Report's description of the lobe |
| Western Northeast Lobe | 6.02 ppt | Report's description of the lobe |
| Grayton Lobe, surface | 23.65 ppt | 2025 sampling mean |
| Grayton Lobe, bottom | 28.10 ppt | 2025 sampling mean |
The report's description and its 2025 sampling table give different numbers for the Grayton Lobe. Both put it well above the other two lobes, and the report's 10-year summary labels the Grayton Lobe's salinity as increasing. Every figure here comes from before Isaias. The table describes how the lake usually behaves, not its condition after the storm.
So the paddle near the Grayton end and the paddle up past 30A have always been in different water. In normal years the Grayton Lobe takes in the Gulf, and the bottleneck limits how much gets past it. The surge came through that same end.
Day Use Came Back in Sixteen Hours
The same surge reached the road into the park. WJHG reported that an estimated three to five feet of surge collapsed the bridge leading into Grayton Beach State Park. Crews worked through the night and rebuilt it in 16 hours, and the park reopened at 8 a.m. that Monday with a sunset close. "I couldn't even tell that anything happened to it," Walton County resident Contessa Pilsen told the station.
Overnight stays were another matter. That WJHG report said overnight stays were still suspended at Florida state parks, and officials would announce when lodging could resume. The Florida State Parks storm updates page, effective October 25, 2026, lists only Topsail Hill Preserve State Park and Blackwater Heritage State Trail as closed for Isaias, along with their overnight accommodations. Grayton isn't on that list. Anyone planning to rent a cabin or campsite should check bookings directly with the park.
Normally the park is the easiest way onto the lake. The Grayton Beach State Park page lists Western Lake paddling and fishing, a boat ramp, and four miles of trails. Day use costs $5 per vehicle, and the park warns that it can close temporarily when it reaches capacity. Since the storm hit the Grayton end hardest, check the park page for the boat ramp and boardwalks before loading a kayak. Walton County also keeps a list of public access points to the coastal dune lakes.
Along the Gulf, a local recovery tracker updated October 22 reported that the beaches had reopened but some beach accesses along 30A were still closed for storm damage. On October 10, WJHG relayed South Walton Fire District guidance warning that damaged flag poles and boardwalks could leave warning flags missing, and that nails and other debris could be in the sand.
How the Lake's Recovery Gets Tracked
The flattened dunes are what stand between the Gulf and the lake, and rebuilding them will take time. Grayton local Cole Taylor told WJHG that sea oats and sand fencing from Gulf-front owners "all helps build the dunes up," and locals told the station they expect the dunes to come back over time. Walton County commissioners have expanded the debris-removal contract to cover public beaches.
The water has its own record. CBA runs a volunteer program with Florida LAKEWATCH in which citizen scientists sample the dune lakes every month for nutrients, chlorophyll, clarity and water chemistry. The group has more than a decade of monthly data on most lakes and shares it with the public on request. That ten-year baseline is how anyone will be able to tell whether a storm reversal changed the Grayton Lobe, or whether the lake simply settled back into its usual cycle, which CBA says continues "until equilibrium is reached and the opening closes."
The Land Side of the Lake Reopened Fast
The water and the dunes will take a while. The village reopened quickly. The October 22 tracker noted that AJ's Grayton Beach reopened on October 12 with a limited menu and an open bar, and Hurricane Oyster Bar at 37 Logan Lane reopened October 14. Both dates came from the restaurants' own Instagram posts.
For the rest of the fall around the lake:
- AJ's Grayton Beach, 63 DeFuniak Street. Its posted Fall Hours 2026 have it open Thursday through Sunday and closed Monday and Tuesday.
- Sunday afternoons at AJ's. Musician Christon Birge's tour calendar lists noon-to-4 sets on Sunday, November 29, and Sunday, December 6.
- The Red Bar. Its events page lists a jazz band Wednesday through Saturday from 5:30 to 9 p.m., with a DJ at 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
- CHIRINGO. The restaurant promotes Tuesday Music Bingo and the Grayton Express shuttle from the Grayton Central lot at County Road 283 and 30A. Walton County's October 6 Tourist Development Council materials show the shuttle running daily from 6 a.m. to 9:45 p.m., with departures every 10 minutes.
One familiar stop is missing. Grayton Beer Company says its taproom is closed until its new Freeport location opens. Its year-round beers are still sold at local retailers.
Hours are still changing as staff and deliveries catch up after the storm, so check each business's own channels before heading out. The park's day-use gate opens at 8 a.m.
The way Western Lake handled Isaias, through one outfall and one narrow channel, is the kind of neighborhood detail 850 Properties keeps track of for clients across Grayton Beach. If you'd like to talk through which part of the lake suits how you want to spend time on the water, our team would be glad to walk the shoreline with you.
